It is time to get ready for winter, as the first frost is on the way. Today and yesterday I got a few projects done which were sorely needed. The goal here isn’t to look pretty but to save on the gas bill. So, I’ve begun to use the old Frost King product my father used to install over windows. Frost King!
As you can see I “Frost Kinged” the blinds shut behind the plastic. My wife and I discussed this a bit, and decided it was the best decision.
I also caulked and screwed in the final two basement windows which had an unexpected effect on the humidity in the basement. It dropped about 10% in less than a day. Now, for the basement, I just need to finish glazing one window and paint three of them and the frames. This will be good for insulating the basement.
After buying an 8×4 sheet of insulation to close off the addition for winter I should have lots of left over scraps to slide into the gaps in the basement where the beams set on the sill plate. I’ll take pictures of that, the windows and the closed addition when I complete those jobs.

Remember this – it doubles the r-value of a single pane of glass. Glass has just about no r-value. Still, it keeps the draft from coming through. Good luck.
